Disability Alliance has joined with Help the Aged and other disability and older peoples organisations to campaign for the end to age discrimination in the provision of benefits. The focus of the campaign is the mobility component of disability living allowance which is currently not available to disabled people aged 65 and over. The campaign was officially launched on April 29th 2004.
We believe that a person's right to receive mobility component should relate to their disability needs not to their age.
We are seeking evidence to back up our campaign and people who would be willing to be quoted in the press.
Some of you may have been sent a letter from your MP enclosing a copy of a Department for Work and Pensions standard response on this subject. The response deliberately confuses the purpose of DLA, and argues it is completely reasonable to give older disabled people less help just because of their age. We have produced a sample rebuttal letter, countering this argument, for you to include in any reply you choose to make to these letters.
Please feel free to adapt this letter to your own style. Remember, if you include personal comments or experiences it makes the letter more powerful.
