If you want to work but have a disability that makes working a problem you may be able to get help from the Access to Work scheme. This provides practical advice to help you overcome these problems. It can also give you grants towards extra employment costs. For more information about the scheme see our Factsheet F27 - access to work.
The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee, (DPTAC) advises the Government on the transport needs of all disabled people across the UK. It also advises on disabled access to buildings and on the street. They have a door to door section in their website which covers going by road, rail, air, sea, travel around London, shopping, going to work, school/college, hospital or going on holiday.
London TravelWatch investigates suggestions and complaints from users of the Underground, the National Rail network, London's bus network, Docklands Light Railway, Croydon Tramlink, taxis and other users of the Greater London Road Network. They also carry out independent research and produce publications on issues affecting transport users.
Citizens advice also publish information on transport options for disabled people.
You can get help with fares or other travel expenses for yourself and anyone who needs to travel with you if you are incapable of getting to hospital on your own. You can also get help if you need to accompany a child.
The cost covered is normally that by the cheapest method of transport available. If you cannot use public transport because of your disability you can claim the cost of taxi fares or the cost of car fuel (you should get the agreement of the hospital first).
To find out if you can get help with hospital fares see our Factsheet F14 - prescription charges/health benefits.
Motability was established to provide disabled people with safe, reliable and affordable cars. You can use this scheme to hire or buy a car or powered wheelchair or scooter if you have been awarded disability living allowance (DLA) high rate mobility component (or war pensioners' mobility supplement). Motability also provides grants for driving lessons.
You can find out more information in our Factsheet F17 - the motability scheme.
If you have problems with walking or other mobility problems you may be able to get a blue badge to enable you to park your car near shops and other places you wish to visit. The scheme operates all over Britain.
You can find out more information in our Factsheet F29 - blue badge scheme.
