Conservative Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has announced a proposed new home protection scheme to prevent elderly people being forced to sell their homes to pay for care.
He states that the Conservative Government, if elected, will introduce a new, voluntary scheme with a one-off joining fee (estimated at around £8,000, paid at age 65) in return for a guarantee that absolutely all fees for permanent residential care would be waived - for life.
The cost of care is high. It has been suggested that the average amount in fees someone has to pay for entering residential care is over £50,000 (this has been disputed), but can be far more if they need to stay for several years. The figure of £8000 must therefore either assume that only a percentage of those paying will need to go into residential care or that costs will be met from other sources.
No statement was made concerning how much those who do not have their own home should have to pay.
