People on incapacity benefits to be put on back to work programme
David Cameron has put forward a package of measures designed to tackle debt and unemployment should the Conservatives be elected.
These include:
simplification of all current back to work strategies into a single Work Programme.
inclusion of people claiming incapacity benefits in the Work Programme.
abolition of the Treasury rule that prevents the Government paying work providers using the benefits saved once someone has a job.
greater support to the young unemployed by referring them on to the Work Programme after 6 months of unemployment compared to a year under the Flexible New Deal.
work providers paid by results with a focus on truly sustainable outcomes and bigger rewards for getting the hardest to help into a job.
DA welcomes support that gets disabled people out of poverty and into work. But we are concerned that rushing 2.6 million people through complex medical assessments may mean many disabled people are incorrectly considered to be work ready - or denied access to support schemes to help find/keep suitable employment.
