The Cost of Participation Campaign

The aim of the campaign is to secure changes in social security benefit rules to make it possible for disabled people to take up appointments on public bodies without losing out financially or putting their benefits at risk.

We have raised the problem with Disability Minister, Maria Eagle and we produced a briefing for members of the All Party Disability Group.

We have also been represented on the Short-life working group on Disability whose report has just been published on the website of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

In addition, Disability Alliance is signed up in support of the Just Rewards campaign which is lobbying for fair compensation for community representatives involved in regeneration programmes. Just Rewards is organised by the magazine New Start and is seeking changes to the benefit rules so that unemployed and disabled people can be paid for their time and effort, just as other members of Boards and Trusts are.
