TIME TO FACE SOME COLD TRUTHS
22 December 2010
Dear Editor,
For thousands of people across the country the recent cold weather spell has been a source of frustration and disappointment. Plans to get away to spend Christmas with their families and loved ones have been ruined, leaving people stuck in their own homes, or even worse stranded at an airport or on a train.
For disabled people living in residential services this feeling of being trapped indoors could become permanent. If the government sticks to its plan to stop paying the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to people in residential services then many disabled people could be left without the support they need to get out and about.
This change to DLA, which is due to be made in October 2012, will mean that thousands of disabled people in residential services will no longer have the funds to meet extra transport costs, such as a powered wheelchair or adapted car. This will take away their independence and stop them from taking part in things that many of us take for granted, like visiting friends or going to the shops.
A coalition of leading disability charities is campaigning against the proposal to take away DLA mobility component from people living in residential services. The more voices that get behind this the better, so please sign our petition today. It only takes a few minutes and could make a huge difference to someone’s life. Visit (insert web address).
Yours sincerely,
