Following the publication of a Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) report, Ministers have decided to abandon the previously proposed Welfare Reform Drug Recovery pilots.
The SSAC report found that such drug recovery pilots are unlikely to be effective because they contain a number of significant flaws and won’t produce robust results.
The Government will instead look at how Government departments can work together to provide the help and support people need to overcome drug and alcohol dependency and get back to work.
A separate DWP Research Report 640: Problem drug users experiences of employment and the benefit system examines the issues surrounding employment and benefit uptake in England by individuals who use illicit drugs.
This study highlights some of the challenges problem drug users (PDUs) face in their everyday lives, the complex needs they have and the barriers they need to overcome before they can move back into employment.
It found that greater integration is needed between drug treatment services, the benefit system, employment services and employers. This, combined with wider availability of support for PDUs, will help to improve outcomes for this group.
