Disability Alliance and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) held a joint parliamentary reception for the Employment Retention Bill between 11am and 1pm in the Jubilee Room, Houses of Parliament
The Employment Retention Bill seeks to strengthen the rights of newly disabled people in work to assessment and interventions that will enable them to retain their employment.

John Robertson MP, hosted the event and gave an overview and introduction to the aims of the Employment Retention Bill.
Roger Lewis, Senior Day Services Officer, Adult and Community Services, London Borough of Lambeth, gave an account of his struggle to retain his employment when his sight deteriorated. He spoke of the measures he believes need to be in place to ensure his experience is not repeated for others.

Vanessa Stanislas, Chief Executive, Disability Alliance spoke about employment and levels of poverty amongst disabled people and the need for a holistic approach to ensure employers play their part in ensuring disabled people are retained in work.
Fazilet Hadi, Director of Policy and Advocacy, RNIB outlined some key statistics on the experiences of visually impaired people and employment, as well as the impact of the Welfare Reform Act, 2007.

Lord McKenzie of Luton, DWP Minister also attended and spoke at the reception outlined the government's work in the area of employment retention.
