Before the introduction of employment and support allowance (ESA) on 27 October 2008 you could get incapacity benefit (IB) if you were sick/disabled and unable to work. Now most new claimants who are sick and unable to work will have to claim ESA.
Some claims for IB will be allowed after 27 October under certain circumstances. If you want more information about the rules for IB please see Factsheet 24 below.
If you want information on the medical test see Factsheet F25.
If you are looking for or starting work see Factsheet F35.
If you want more detailed information about incapacity benefit you should see Disability Alliance's Disability Rights Handbook. This gives advice about the benefit, the medical test and medical as well as how to appeal against a decision to remove your benefit.
If you need to claim ESA see our employment and support allowance page.
