Income support (IS) is a means tested benefit for those who do not have to 'sign on' as available for and actively seeking work and who are on or below a certain income. You can also have income support paid on top of your existing benefits.
Before the introduction of employment and support allowance (ESA) on 27 October 2008 you could get IS if you were sick/disabled and unable to work. Now most new claimants who are sick and unable to work will have to claim ESA.
If you want more information about the rules for IS please see Factsheet F45 below.
If you want information on the medical test for people who are on IS and who are sick/disabled and unable to work see Factsheet F25.
If you are looking for or starting work see Factsheet F35.
If you need to claim ESA see our employment and support allowance page.
If you want more detailed information about income support you should see Disability Alliance's Disability Rights Handbook. This gives you information about all the rules for IS including claiming, calculation, housing costs and how to appeal against a decision to remove your benefit.
