We are deeply saddened by the news that Disability Alliance's co-founder and long term Chairman, Peter Townsend died on 8 June.
Peter founded Disability Alliance in 1974, when representatives of a large number of organisations joined forces to protest at the failure of the Government and opposition to adopt programmes that would lead to a comprehensive income for disabled people.
Peter worked with tireless energy and commitment towards breaking the link between poverty and disability. He engaged and inspired Disability Alliance's members, staff and Trustees, both past and present to keep up the momentum of our campaigning and social policy agenda.
His work in the analysis of poverty is legendary and it feels very odd to imagine a world without his gentle voice, his deep insight, views, incredible intellect and commitment to campaigning against poverty.
Alan Walker (Professor of social policy and social gerontology - University of Sheffield ) said that Peter's work inspired thousands and benefited millions and when thinking about how I wanted to pay tribute to Peter, I realised I could not have thought of a better accolade than this.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Peter's family and friends at this terribly sad time.
