This project has now finished.
The Combat Poverty Unit was financed by the Community Fund for three years from January 2002 to January 2005. The unit had two policy workers. As its title suggests, the new Policy Unit focused primarily on identifying and resolving social and economic issues that generate poverty among disabled people.
Among the issues investigated was the financial impact of hospital benefit reductions on disabled people and carers as well as the additional financial costs of either being a disabled parent or having having more than one disabled child.
Our aims were to ascertain the real costs of disability for both adults and children to ensure that a realistic combination of benefits and employment opportunities addressed the poverty and social exclusion in which the vast majority of people with disabilities live.
