New Legal Alliance to Help Disabled People Fight Unfair Cuts

8 April 2011

Disability Alliance is pleased to announce the formal partnership with the specialist law firm for disability discrimination, Unity Law, to provide legal advice and support to anyone who is being discriminated against because of disability.

The partnership is very timely, coming amid potential breaches of community care law as Councils increase charges for essential homecare support [1].

Disability Alliance and Unity Law are both focused on ensuring that disabled people get fair access to support.

Neil Coyle, Director of Policy at the Disability Alliance and chair of the Coalition on Charging commented:

“Many councils appear to be breaching their duties with regards to supporting some disabled people, particularly in adult social care. By partnering with Unity Law we hope to ensure people are able to fight the cuts.

“Together, we may seek a legal challenge against a council we believe is in breach of care or equality law obligations in homecare charging policy – including failing to appropriately assess disabled people’s Disability Related Expenditure.”

Chris Fry, Managing Partner at Unity Law added:

“Our focus is on ensuring people have access to the services they need. The research conducted by the Disability Alliance shows that the proposed cuts could seriously impact on people’s lives, not just on reducing their quality of life but, in some cases, infringing on their human rights. By working together we can reach out to the many families who are worried or affected by changes in their homecare service.”

If you are worried that you or someone you know will be affected by changes in homecare services, or feel you are being discriminated against because of a disability, then contact the Disability Alliance at www.disabilityalliance.org  or Unity Law at www.unity-law.co.uk
