TSU Seminar - Employment & Support Allowance: a year to go

The TSU seminar took place on Tuesday 2 October 2007 at The Resource Centre, 356 Holloway Road , London N7 6PA.

About the seminar

In October 2008 employment and support allowance (ESA) will replace incapacity benefit and income support for people incapable of work because of an illness or disability. A year before ESA’s introduction, the Tribunal Support Unit at Disability Alliance presented a seminar to examine and explain the key practical issues for benefits advisers.

The event provided an overview of how the new benefit will work and the likely timetable for implementation.

Each delegate had the opportunity to attend two of the following workshops:

• ESA Appeals – how similar and how different are ESA appeals to incapacity appeals?
• Work-related activity and sanctions – what are the rules and what are the penalties?
• The medical tests – what are the three new medical tests for ESA claimants and how will they be carried out?
